When we were growing up my family would always take a summer trip to an aquarium. We went to almost every aquarium on the North eastern coast. Whenever we travel to a place, we go to the aquarium. Whether my parents meant to or not, they created a tradition.
This past week we finally were able to take our "summer trip" (Yes the first day of October) to visit South Florida Museum and tiny obscure aquarium that houses Snooty the Manatee. Snooty is the oldest living manatee in captivity. We put Charger in day care and hauled ourselves into the car for a day road trip down to Sarasota.
Even though I'm physically leaving the pod, I suspect that traveling to aquariums is one tradition that we will keep doing. Honestly, it's something that I know my brother and I look forward to. We always leave with some good stories. For example, this trip we are all now doing the Snooty pose, which is an awkward hands out lay on any counter.
Because we waited until after the summer and traveled during a weekday, we were basically the only people in the place. I got to chat with one of Snooty's caretakers and we got trapped listening to a lecture in the planetarium. After leaving the museum we decided to eat a lot. This is the part where dad usually finds a restaurant with "must try" dishes. We ended up having dinner at 3:45pm.
As I am breaking the boomerang I definitely will cherish and make it a point to participate in these traditions. I also can't wait to make some of my own with new roommate. Who knows what it will be. Either way, I hope it is as entertaining and memorable as these trips are.
