Golden Wood

One of my greatest challenges is figuring out color. The town home I'm moving into is a former model home. This is great because it has some fabulous extras like marble counters in the kitchen and random architectural elements. One not so great thing is that the designer went a little nuts on the color. There's interesting wall paper in the bathrooms too. My first order of business will be to remove the wall paper in the master bathroom and repaint the guest room (which is currently purple).

I realized very early on that I have no eye for color combining or decorating. I know what I like, but usually it is a challenge for me to coordinate things. That being said, in my quest to find a color for the bathroom, would have to complement the wooden cabinets.

In my mind I am an awesome DIY, crafty human. In reality, I am far too lazy and I can't even tell you how many unfinished projects I have in my possession. So I knew going in that refinishing the cabinets were not an option. Part of me still thinks it's possible, but then the lazy part of me says why bother.

Next I began my quest for finding a complementing color for wood. I quickly realized that the trend right now is dark stained wood. What color are those cabinets? Well I had the hardest time figuring that out. I Googled "Yellow Wood," which is more like a pencil color. Next was "Golden Wood," which turns out to be resort in Canada. Finally I just typed "Ugly Wood Cabinets." Sorry for people who really enjoy Oak, but the color of those cabinets which irk me so much is Oak. It's just your basic cabinet from the 1980s.

Hooray I have the color in which I can match! Again Pinterest tried to lure me into "simply sanding and staining," but I know better. I would probably end up with ruining the whole thing. Therefore, I'm just going with finding a color scheme that works with the existing fixtures. Maybe next house, I'll pay better attention; or far more likely, oak cabinets will come back into style.

My dream bathroom has clean lines, lots of natural light, and pretty cabinets. But let's be real, no one lives like that. At least, I don't think they do.

So colors that go with oak. I have officially learned that cool and neutral tones go with oak. WTF!? How can a color be cool? I think black is cool. I'm wearing an orange tank top to feel cool. Can a color make you feel cool? Are these people referring to like colors of ice cream. I don't know.

Here's my plan. I went to Sherwin Williams and I picked up all the paint chips that I think are pretty. I will next go to the bathroom and stare at them. I suspect that a gray, blue, yellow, or green lighter tone will work? Hey at least I narrowed it down to five shades. The fiber of my being wants gray, but wouldn't you know that gray is a relative term to simpletons and in the marketing of paint there are hundreds of grays. Now to narrow down the grays...
