Packing 101 - My Tips so Far

I started to find the most efficient ways to pack when traveling back and forth to college. I have to say that even though it's been a while, my packing techniques definitely still worked well.

1) Start small and start early. If you rush you will get stressed start with simple attainable goals like: building all your boxes. Filling a bag of clothes for donations. Emptying one drawer.

Boomerang Tip #1: 5-minute packing challenge. To motivate myself I would create a Spotify playlist and have about 5-10 minutes worth of music. I'd start the music and try to either clean or pack as many items as possible in that 10 minutes. If I was motivated, I'd do it again. By gaming something, it makes it slightly less tedious.

2) Seriously if you haven't used it in a year. Throw it out or donate it. For the little hoarder in me, this is one of the hardest things to do. I can't part with my treasures, but I like to think that it's out there actually getting use, rather than sitting in my closet because by golly one day I will put on those tap shoes again or hand them down to my kid. Which kid really wants like 30 year old tap shoes.

3) Small boxes are easier to move, but fill up faster and you have to move more of them. I went the small box route or the pequeña collection.

4) Heavy things go on the bottom. Light thing go on top. Small things wedge in.

5) Label your boxes or number them and keep the contents listed in a notebook. An ounce of organization means less chaos on the back end. Also it probably helps to keep one box per category like bedroom, or bathroom supplies.

6) Newspaper is a cheaper and reliable alternative to bubble wrap. It's also more environmentally friendly.

7) I use garbage bags for clothes. As you can see in the photo up top. I just take a garbage bag and put it on the clothes in the hangar. I suppose you could also come from the top down, but I feel like i get more bang for my buck. I'm certain professional movers would not appreciate that set up, but I am moving myself so there!

8) I was not moving far from my home nest. So every time I'd visit the new house to let someone in to do work or just to clean. I'd bring a box or two and hide it in a closet. Why waste a trip if you're going there anyway.

One thing I have no idea is cohabiting a closet. I didn't THINK I had a lot of clothes and shoes, but I totally do. I have an entire townhouse to fill, but my closet now is probably 1/3 the size of a guest room. So somehow we have to fit my clothes and new roommate's clothes into one space. How?
