How did you keep track of your houses?
I had a crazy spreadsheet that broke down the address, costs, pros and cons, etc. This really helped John and I stay organized. You can see my crazy spreadsheet here. Contact me if you want an Excel or Google Docs version to edit on your own.
How long did you look?
We looked for 30 days. I feel like with the technology out there you can really get a good idea of what a house looks like and the surrounding area. The internet was a great jumping off point, but even more helpful was our drive bys. Even before visiting the houses with Tara, John and I drove around the neighborhoods we were interested in. Some of the "nice houses" were quickly shot down when we saw the surrounding neighborhoods and the distance from our work.
Who did you get your loan from?
Ironically getting a mortgage was probably the best experience we had. We had a great loan coordinator named Amanda from FBC Home Loans. Amanda was super attentive and was really great at communicating.
Who was your home inspector?
We met an eclectic South African named Aubrey Khan from Firm Foundation Home Inspection. Aubrey came and inspected the house with a whole bunch of crazy toys including a fancy drone with awesome cameras to inspect the roof. Mr. Khan even provides a 100-day home warranty.
